Privacy Policy

This privacy policy describes how the Stamp Duty Calculator website ("the site", "we") collects, uses, and protects information about you. By using the site you agree to this policy. We aim to keep data collection to an absolute minimum.

Who we are

This site is operated as a free informational calculator for UK Stamp Duty Land Tax (SDLT). We are not a regulated financial adviser, conveyancer, or tax adviser. The site is for general guidance only.

Information we collect

The calculator runs entirely in your browser. The values you enter (property price, buyer type) are not sent to our servers. They are only encoded into the URL so you can share or bookmark a result.

We collect:

• Cookie consent choice. Stored locally in your browser using localStorage so we know whether to load advertising scripts.
• Standard server logs. Our hosting provider may record your IP address, browser type, and pages visited as part of normal web server operation. These logs are kept for security, analytics and abuse prevention.
• Analytics. We use Google Analytics 4 to understand how visitors use the site (pages viewed, traffic sources, broad geographic region). Analytics only loads after you accept cookies. If you choose "Essential only" we still record an anonymous, cookieless page-view ping but no personal identifiers.

Cookies and similar technologies

A cookie is a small file stored on your device. We and third parties we work with use cookies and similar local-storage techniques. The site uses the following categories:

• Strictly necessary. A single localStorage key (sdc_consent_v1) recording your cookie-consent choice. This is set even if you choose "Essential only" because we have to remember that choice.
• Advertising (with your consent). If you click "Accept all" we load Google AdSense, which may set its own cookies in order to serve and measure advertising. AdSense's cookies are governed by Google's policies.

You can change your choice at any time by clicking Cookie preferences in the footer.

Advertising and Google AdSense

We use Google AdSense to show advertising on this site. AdSense uses cookies and other technologies to serve ads. With your consent, ads may be personalised based on your previous activity. Without your consent, we instruct Google to serve only non-personalised ads; these still use a small amount of data (such as your approximate location and the current page) to avoid serving inappropriate content.

Lawful basis (UK GDPR)

For strictly necessary technologies (your cookie-consent choice) we rely on legitimate interest — we cannot operate the site without remembering it. For personalised advertising we rely on consent, which you give explicitly via the cookie banner.

Your rights

Under UK GDPR you have rights of access, rectification, erasure, restriction, objection and portability in respect of personal data we hold about you. To exercise any of these rights, contact us using the email address above. You also have the right to complain to the UK Information Commissioner's Office at ico.org.uk.

Children

The site is not directed at children under 13 and we do not knowingly collect personal data from them.

Third-party processors we use

We rely on a small number of trusted third-party services to run the site. Each is disclosed here in full for transparency.

No third-party processor receives payment, contact, or account credentials — we do not collect any of those categories. All processors are contractually bound by data-processing agreements that meet UK GDPR standards.

Data retention

We retain personal data only for as long as necessary for the purposes it was collected for:

• Analytics event data: 14 months (Google Analytics standard retention setting), then automatically deleted.
• Access logs (hosting): 24 hours rolling.
• Support emails: 2 years from last contact, then permanently deleted unless retention is required by law.
• Consent records: stored in your browser's local storage; you can clear them at any time via your browser settings or by clicking "Cookie preferences" in the site footer.

International data transfers

Some of our processors (notably Google) may transfer personal data outside the UK. Where they do so, they rely on one or more of:

• The UK's "adequacy" decisions for specific destinations
• The EU-US Data Privacy Framework (where transfers are to certified US organisations)
• Standard Contractual Clauses (SCCs) approved by the UK Information Commissioner's Office

We do not initiate any international transfers of personal data directly from our own systems.

How to exercise your rights

To exercise any of the UK GDPR rights described above (access, rectification, erasure, restriction, portability, objection, withdraw consent), email privacy@dutycalculatorstamp.co.uk. We respond to Subject Access Requests (SARs) within one calendar month, in line with the UK GDPR statutory deadline. We may need to verify your identity before processing a request that discloses personal data.

If we cannot resolve your concern to your satisfaction, you have the right to complain to the UK's data-protection regulator, the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO):

Automated decision-making

We do not engage in any automated decision-making that produces legal or similarly significant effects on you.
